Residents help lightening struck homeowner

An elderly lady was forced to flee her home this week when it was struck by a freak bolt of lightening, causing the roof to catch fire.

The thunder rumbles and crash from the lightening were heard all accross Upminster at around 8.15pm on Wednesday, four fire engines were sent to the two-storey property.

The London Fire Brigade said the elderly woman, who lives in the house alone, was uninjured after escaping shortly before fire crews arrived. A spokeswoman confirmed lightning was believed to have caused the fire.

It has also been reported that the lady was already having a terrible week after being mugged on her doorstep two days before.

Local residents and friends have started a fund raising for the lady to help compenstate for her awful week.
